Academics

What the curriculum includes.

The Academy is made up of small classes taught by a well-trained, caring staff in an adult, business-like atmosphere. Schedules are tailored to students' needs. And, teachers are skilled in connecting students to community resources that can help break down barriers to a students' success. Each division serves about 75 students with a student-teacher ratio of 8:1.

Academic Courses are competency-based and aligned to the Virginia Department of Education academic standards. Students study up to four courses at a time using coursework assisted by Web-based Study Island Learning Systems. Students maintain an individual computer where there is connectivity to the internet.

Real life project work opportunities abound, preparing students for their future. Field trips allow students to enjoy various enrichment opportunities in the community that can be further discussed, studied, and documented back at the Technology Academy. Unique opportunities create a learning environment, where students can move throughout the school to take advantage of different spaces that emphasize language, drama, music, art, and other cultures. Project work provides students with ample opportunity for discussion, decision making, choices, cooperation, initiative, negotiation, compromise, and evaluation of the outcomes of their own work and investigation. Students can explore their world at their own pace-projects can take from hours to weeks to complete, depending on where the students' ideas and questions lead them. The Technology Academy's town meeting approach offers an opportunity for students, teachers, and parents to continually work together to forge the path of students' knowledge, the subject matter that will be covered in the classroom, and the means by which knowledge will be displayed through documentation. Foreign language is introduced at different times throughout the year.

All Students are expected to be engaged in a career-related experience that may include part-time employment in their chosen field, job shadowing, apprenticeship, internship, or volunteer placement.

Learning is a journey we make together.

To enable each student to optimally benefit from this journey, the vision of the Technology Academy includes the following goals: to respect, to help, and to provide. Each student is respected as an individual. Paths chosen for learning differ with each student, and we respect each student's ability to take risks and try new things. We provide support and respectful encouragement to help students thrive in their discoveries.
